POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION PROGRAM

Encouraging students to gain access to post-secondary education and graduate with the skills and competencies needed to pursue individual careers.

Ultimately, this contributes to the advancement of First Nations self-governance and economic self-reliance.

ELIGIBILITY

Before the Athabasca Tribal Council can provide sponsorship to students the student must meet the Student Eligibility Criteria for the Student Support Program and/or the University and College Eligibility Program (UCEP). 

Funding is not always guaranteed. Eligibility to be considered for funding does not guarantee that an individual will be approved to receive support. Funding approval is based on the following categories: 

  • Category 1: Student Eligibility Criteria 

    • Students must be of Treaty or C-31 status and is a registered band member of one of the following First Nations:

      • Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation 

      • Chipewyan Prairie First Nation 

      • Fort McMurray 468 First Nation 

  • Category 2: Program of Study 

  • Category 3: Approved Institution 

  • Category 4: Funding Priority Level 

  • Category 5: First Nation Distribution 

 

Application Process

Obtain an “Application Package” by contacting the Education Coordinator at the Athabasca Tribal Council office. The package includes the Education Funding Policy and a set of forms (refer to Appendix C) that must be completed and returned to the office. Incomplete applications without required supporting documents will be returned to the applicant. Approval of the completed application is subject to the availability of funding. Students are responsible for reading and understanding the terms set out in this policy manual. Where clarification is needed, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the Education Coordinator for a further detailed explanation.

Annual Application Deadline:

September Semester Start - Application Deadline June 15

January Semester Start - Application Deadline November 15 (based on the availability of funding)

May/August Semester Start - Application Deadline March 31

All students must reapply each year prior to the application deadline date.
