RED DRESS SOLIDARITY WALK & MEMORIAL ROUND DANCE

Honour and remember MMEIP Loved Ones.

The National Day of Awareness of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit Plus Folks is May 5th each year. This day is also known as Red Dress Day. The Red Dress, hanging alone, without a person to embody it, symbolizes the thousands of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada. The Wood Buffalo Region takes an inclusive approach by including men and boys on this day.

On Sunday, May 5th, 2024, it is estimated that 500 residents of the Wood Buffalo region and honoured guests gathered at Kiyam Community Park in Fort McMurray for a day of events. The day was planned by the MMEIP Taskforce, which includes partners from the Athabasca Tribal Council, Nistawoyou Association Friendship Centre, and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, along with Elders, grassroots advocates, and local support organizations.

The 2024 Solidary Walk & Memorial Round Dance is a way for community members to honour their loved ones and for the public to show families they are not alone in their fight for justice and an end to this epidemic within the Indigenous community.
