Everyone is invited to participate in the Community Gathering and Walk to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed on September 30 and falls on a Saturday this year. Through discussions with Indigenous partners, a decision was made in collaboration with Indigenous communities, ATC - Athabasca Tribal Council and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to hold a community gathering and walk on Thursday, September 28, ensuring that education and awareness are as widespread as possible, creating opportunities for local schools and youth to be involved.

The gathering begins at 10 a.m. at Kiyām Community Park with a prayer, the inaugural raising of the Survivors' flag and a brief address before walking the designated loop through downtown. After the walk, light refreshments will be provided at the park with an opportunity for community members to learn, listen and reflect on the importance of the day. The gathering and walk are held in partnership with the Athabasca Tribal Council.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to honour Residential School Survivors, their families, and their communities. It is also an important time to listen, learn, and understand the legacy of Residential Schools, the wrongs carried out by the churches and the Canadian government and the harm that continues to impact Indigenous Peoples and communities.
