Language
The Athabasca Tribal Council works to preserve our Indigenous languages of both the Cree and Déne languages within our 5 First Nation member communities.
Language Apps
Available Now! Cree & Déne apps
In an effort to preserve our Indigenous languages, and encourage youth, and anyone with a smartphone, to learn our languages. We have developed innovative, fun, and interactive apps for both the Cree and Déne languages in the dialects that exist within our 5 First Nation member communities.
The app teaches common words that learners can use daily when speaking with Elders or others in the community. Important nouns and words for medicine, numbers and directions create a foundation for communication and the beginnings of language preservation.
The apps are available to download for free through your Google or Apple app store. These apps have over 400 words, with a growing list, that will help those interested learn the languages.
We worked closely with local Elders to develop these language apps.
We are encouraged by the opportunity to engage our youth, and others, through technology. Give it a try and let us know how you like it!

Updated Apps in development
Building on the success of our first apps for the Cree and Déne languages within our communities, we are excited to continue to work with the ever-changing technology to make our languages accessible to anyone who is interested in learning.
These new and improved apps are in development with an anticipated release in 2023.
Elders and fluent community members are welcome to participate in the development process.
