Tyrone C.

Twenty-six-year-old Tyrone, from Fort McMurray 468 First Nation, successfully completed Athabasca Tribal Council’s (ATC) Security Guard Training Program, ultimately securing employment which was his goal when he started.

Tyrone credits ATC’s Program Coordinator, Natalie Cunningham, with encouraging him all the way to successful completion.

“She was very helpful and informative along the way,” he says. “Natalie made sure I was up to date with all the prerequisites needed, and was extremely patient while I attempted the final exam three times. I eventually passed with an 87%.”

A typical day for Tyrone during the program included completing one or two modules as part of the 40-hour online training. After completing the 40 hours, he studied for and attempted the exam until he passed. Once he did, he was then ready to apply for a security guard position.

The amount of studying required to successfully complete the Security Guard Training Program didn’t take Tyrone by surprise. For him, the hard work was worth it.

“The highlight of the program was receiving my exam results knowing I had passed and I was closer to finishing the entire program,” he said.

When asked what he would tell someone who is thinking about taking the Security Guard Training program or a similar program, Tyrone said: “If anyone is unsure about taking the program the best way to be sure is to inquire about it. Get in contact with the Athabasca Tribal Council and whomever there who is running the program then make your decision.”

Indigenous Security Guard Program is funded by Service Canada and the Government of Alberta – Indigenous Relations and administered by the Athabasca Tribal Council. GardaWorld is the hiring partner.
